Off-Duty Firefighter Injures Two in Bronx DWI Accident

An off-duty FDNY lieutenant has been charged with DWI after he drove his SUV into two women in a Bronx crosswalk.  One of the women, 42-year-old Mantaz Begun, was seven months pregnant and gave birth prematurely; her baby girl is on life support.

Begun was on walking home from Montefiore Medical Center with a friend when both women were hit by a Chevrolet Suburban driven by FDNY Lt. Sean Farrell, 39, as they crossed Westchester Ave. in the Bronx.  Farrell was turning onto Westchester from White Plains Road when he hit the two women.

Begun complained of stomach pain and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where her baby girl was born and then put on life support.  Begun was in the intensive care unit for internal bleeding.  Begun’s 38-year-old friend was treated at Jacobi for a broken pelvis.

According to authorities, this is the second time in the last four years that Farrell has been arrested on a DWI charge.  In this latest incident, Farrell refused to take a Breathalyzer test and was immediately suspended by the FDNY for 30 days.
